Turn 23 to 40

Stroll on the lands of Agartha, turn 24 to 28

The first action of the war was to storm that irritating fortress Agartha had set up in Mountains of Evernight, right on the border. All the available troops converged on the stronghold that was taken unaware. 100 Valkyries, 40 hirdmen and a few mounted hirdmen laid the siege and quickly brought down its defences. And to honor the life that was rising everywhere in that early spring, the few defenders were put to death without delay …

As a Dis was building a new temple to spread the rightful faith in that newly captured land, some dire news came up from the western reaches of the kingdom. Indeed, the bat people of Xibalba was being destroyed. The humans of Marverni had been eating them from the west while Daurgothoth the Dracolich , the scary pretender of Niefelheim, was taking control of their lands on the south-western border. Ur was also part of the game and was pushing into the western mountains to their capital.

As such, the council of War decided to secure that west-most border and dispatched there a small party of 10 Valkyries. That didn’t change any plan however regarding the fate of Agartha and the campaign went on, taking their few unfortified territories out of their hands.

These operations went rather well. The scouts then spotted a number of Crystal sorceresses gathered in the Agarthian fortress of Momephe. These sorceresses were known to train some sacred flying Pegasus riders . This information raised utmost interest in the war council. Indeed, these riders were renowned for their agility, and with Lord Kall’s bless they would certainly be untouchable. A decision was quickly taken and available forces began to converge on Momephe.

At the same time, Yrsa the Dis had been ordered to search for the darkest places in the newly conquered lands, drawing on Dark knowledge as she had been taught in her youth. And one of her discovery drew attention : a Banefire forge was found under the throne of Thorns ! That magical place was renowned, some famous magical artifacts had been crafted in its fires, and skilled mages could use it too for great purposes. As a result, a Vanjarl was sent there to prepare the place to host mages and craftsmen.

By mid-summer of this second year of the war of Ascension, things looked rather good. The provinces of Xibalba on the western marches had been secured, the Banefire Forge was ready to forge numerous items, and the fortress of Momephe, key to recruiting Crystal sorceress and Pegasus riders, was about to be stormed. And all the peace treaties signed there and there were as healthy as ever … Lord Kall, though still in his dark prison, was confident. May be he had more time to get free than expected, Helheim’s leaders were doing rather well without him …

Disaster in Momephe, turn 29

Skaljv was more confident than ever. She had mustered the strongest force of Valkyries ever seen on a battlefield, 100 fierce ladies ready to give their life for her and their god. And these were not any ladies, but only the best of the best, as some of them had been fighting continously for now more than 2 years ! And since the beginning of the war, almost every single battle had been a cakewalk. Sure, a few mistakes were made, but only to refine the unbeatable tactics that led them from victory to victory.

The scouts had been clear : the enemy forces consisted of only 15 crystal sorceress , a few one-eyed mages and at most 20 pale-one warriors . They would be crushed, like insects.

The battle orders were the same that had been the key to so many victories. Skaljv would call upon the powers of Lord kall and bless her sacred troops with his powers, giving them supernatural agility and enhanced magical weapons. And then, after taking some time to watch the battlefield, they would fly and fall on the rears of the ennemy, spreading chaos and butchering the commanders. And then the routed enemy troops would be tracked down and slaughtered to the very last … The only thing that had changed in the tactics was that since Skaljv had become a most precious commander, she was to stay behind and monitor the battle rather than get into the fight as she did before. Nobody wanted to see her injured, or worse, killed, by some accidental arrow.

So the battle started as usual. Blessing everybody, taking off, falling on the rear, and … something was wrong. Why were the rearmost troops simple soldiers and why were the sorceresses on the frontline ? In fact … there was not much time to think as things went really fast. As soon as the Valkyries fell on the enemy rearguard made of simple Pale one soldiers, they, as planned slaughtered them. But what happened next couldn’t have been imagined in their worst nightmares. Suddenly the sky darkened and tens of thunderstrikes fell to the ground in the midst of their formation. Some valkyries were instantly vaporized while some others were stunned by the shockwaves. And as the surviving stunned ones started to recover, another wave of thunderstrikes fell on them, leaving such a carnage behind them that only a single Valkyrie miraculously survived and fled away.

In shock, Skaljv ordered a hasty retreat for her and her bodyguards … but how come was that possible ? It was like she had stepped in hell in a fraction of a second. Her entire elite army had been wiped out. The entire battle had lasted only a few minutes, just the time to call on the powers of Lord Kall and watch her maidens die …

Lord Kall is free ! Turn 30

When the news of the battle arrived to Lord Kall, he couldn’t believe it. How come his elite armies had been destroyed just like that ? Who was responsible for such a disaster ? His anger rose, and rose, and rose … Nobody would prevent him to become the next Pantokrator, nobody would stand in his path ! What did they believe these one-eyed creatures, that they could kill the elite of his army and get away with it ? What did they believe his so-called war council, that they could ruin his plans with their stupidity ? NO ! NO ONE WOULD STAND IN HIS WAY !

And as his wrath grew, a hidden power awoke in him and the magics surrounding his prison started to crumble. And the mountain itself in which he was imprisoned started to crumble too. And in a scream of rage, a wave of raw power went from the heart of the mountain to its top, making it explode like a volcano. And emerging from the fumes was Lord Kall, surrounded by an aura of such power that no living being, nor any god, would have dared to approach him in this moment. And in a sharp gesture, he opened the gates of reality and through the paths of Ether moved instantly from his former prison to the Grand Temple of Helheim.

The words of his arrival spread like the wind. Here he was their beloved god, in flesh and bones ! Here he was Lord Kall, Shining boat of Heaven, God of the Sacred Eye, Opener of the Wells, He who make clear the way ! Soon every single Noble and Priest was there. All those who came started to celebrate a mass in his honour. In face of this devotion, Lord Kall’s rage slowly fell down and vanished … together with His people, he mourned for the deads of his army, together with his people he rejoiced for his freedom.

And as this memorable ceremony came to its end, he was as determined as ever. True they had lost a battle, but they had not lost the war. His enemies would soon learn that no one stands in the way of Helheim and Lord Kall.

From the smoldering mountain will come out the jailed one
He will be worshiped by the ladies beyond

Gaining time, turn 31 to 36

The plan

It was just like nothing had happened. The disaster of Momephe was not forgotten, but the initial shock had given way to resolution. Helheim was a proud people, knowledgeable of their strength, and not prone to giving up. If the enemy had put in place such clever tactics, then they would find better ones.

And so new battle plans were devised. So the enemy could muster the power of Thunder ? Let’s forge Storm Spools  and Copper plates to make the commanders immune to these forces. And they were channeling these magic through weak sorceresses ? The Svartalf , the dark dwarves of Helheim had mastered the ways of Earthquake . As such, they could make the earth shake with such power that mere humans like sorceresses would be shaken to their death. So every efforts in the kingdom was to set up an Earthquake team, escorted by fully equiped Vanjarls, to raid the enemy army and destroy their best weapon. And then, deprived of it, the rest of their forces would be crushed by a newly formed army of Valkyries .

But as the plan went on, some new challenges arose. Indeed, as the enemy was claiming back the lands previously conquered by Skaljv, the scouts observed their armies coming directly out of Agartha. And the sorceresses were not the least of their forces, as large worms , the Great Olms were seen wreaking havoc of the small defenses left behind. Indeed, they could paralyze and sometime kill other beings with the sheer power of their mind. Also, these troops were accompanied by Magma children , servants of Rhuax the King of Elemental Fire, that had agreed a long time ago to lend to Agartha his creatures in exchange for some magical fire gems . And last but not least, a lot of large Earth elementals  were spotted. These creatures made of rock and stone were so big that with their massive body they could crush any creature up to the size of a horse.

And so with these new threats had to be devised new defenses. Against the Great Olms mind power, some Amulets of Antimagic , Lodestone amulets and Lead shields  were necessary. Also, the great Earthquake planned to be thrown at the enemy would probably be deadly to the dwarves casting it themselves. That’s why Rings of Levitation  had to be crafted to protect them from the shaking earth.

The Magma children were known to be fragile, but their Fire was deadly. The Earthquake team would probably take down enough of them, but, if not, a strong force of archers would probably be able to weaken or destroy the survivors. The last concern was about the Earth elementals. There, only numbers could overcome them, or creatures large enough to stand up to them. Lacking that kind of large creatures, the strategy of numbers was chosen. Many human serfs were then recruited, along with some hard hitting barbarians  well suited to kill these beasts. Finally, Lord Kall had not renounced the idea of summoning creatures large enough to overcome them, and the mages over the empire were ordered to find a way to summon such beasts.

But all of these plans needed time. Several months were required both to gather the large number of magic gems necessary to craft all of these magical items, and also craft them properly : there were not that many skilled smiths in Helheim. Also, as many of them were to be moved to the Banefire forge and that would take time too.

So the point was to keep the enemy busy while both the new army and the Eartquake team were being assembled.

Gaining time

Thankfully, the enemy wasn’t confident enough to launch a large counter-attack immediatly and, after retaking most of his former territories, gathered his forces in Agartha. This was a relief as the armies of Helheim were not ready to stand up the might displayed by the enemy. However, in order to keep him busy, a first raid was sent on his rears in the north, the first of several to come.

In late fall, some good news arrived from the fortress of Ard. A friendly shaman had found a Moonvine circle, a gathering of Enchanters , adepts of both Astral and Nature magic. They would join the cause, for a price, but would come in handy for helping with powerful Nature battle spells that no other mages in Helheim could otherwise cast.

And one morning a triumphant message came to Lord Kall. The scholars of the realm, helped by the newly recruited enchanters of Ard, had finally uncovered the means to summon and bind to their service the fearsome Jotun wolves . These were not any beasts. Considered sacred by the people of Helheim, these creatures lived hidden in the deepest of the mountains and forests of the world. And this was for the best as the sight of only one of them filled any man with utter terror. Bigger than a horse, stronger than an elephant, these mercyless predators left no chance to their preys. Furthermore their thick skin was almost as strong as a light chainmail and even if you could strike at them, they were not an easy kill. But the scariest thing was that if you ever managed to injure one without killing it, it would then enter in a murderous rage that would not stop until the death of his opponent … or himself.

Soon, the strategists devised that the wolves were the perfect match for the enemy Earth elementals. Indeed they were too big and too strong to be trampled and would easily stand their ground in front of these lifeless beings. This was one of the major concern of the upcoming battle, and there was the perfect solution !

And some other news came in. Lord Kall had felt that some pretender had awoken the power of the throne of Gaia. This meant that for a few months the forces of nature would go wild and cause chaos all over the world. And indeed, right in the middle of winter, as Agartha was threatening to attack Helheim far too soon, their rears were lost to several wild Earth elementals wreaking havoc everywhere, along with some horde of barbarians that thought it would be a good time for pillaging.

To keep on gaining time, the war council decided to give a bad surprise to Agartha by besieging his other fortresses. Sneaky riders, hirdmen and a renewed host of Valkyries fell on their rears and became a threat that could not be ignored. The enemy then had a choice to make, and retreating to defend its most important strongholds looked like the only rational one.

Also, Mictlan to the north made a bold move, retaking a raided province and attacking the Agarthan fortress besieged by Helheim’s raiders. Though the raiders left unscathed, retreating into the shadows, it looked clearly like a move to destroy them. The war council thought they had made a defensive alliance with Agartha. That was rather a worry because it meant the enemy had now the means to secure their rears against further raids …

That mid-winter was also the news of the final fall of Xibalba. Marverni was starting to show its true might : hordes of sacred great boars were crushing any opposition. Their god also “protected” them with some rather strange and scary magic … indeed, when they were filled with the power of their Lord, anyone hurting them took the risk of hurting himself.  That meant that a man pushing a blade in their belly would feel the same pain, and death, as the boar. And any way used to hurt them could blowback, especially battle magic. Even though that vicious magic was far less effective against strong-minded people, it was a risk for everyone fighting them. And soon it was decided that everything should be made to avoid a war against Marverni and avoid facing these monstrosities.

Thankfully, Helheim already had some good commercial relationships with Marverni, trading with them many precious magical gems. As is Lord Kall used all of his diplomatic skills to stay in their good graces and prevent an unwanted war.

By the beginning of the third year of the Ascension war, Helheim had gained enough time to prepare its battle plan to defeat Agartha. Given how their armies had dispersed to counter the raids and other unfortunate events, by the time they would reach Mountains of Evernight, everything would be ready.

Gathering power, turn 37 to 40

While the war council was devising what to think of the Agartha/Mictlan alliance good news arrived : Agartha had attacked and defeated the Mictlan forces that had replaced the Helheim’s raiders. So it wasn’t an alliance after all, just an opportunistic move from the masters of Blood . Whatever, it had forced Agartha to delay their counter-attack on Mountains of Evernight for 2 more months, which led it to mid-summer. So, with precise planification, the war council decided to let Agartha take its time to come while dealing with other matters.

The first thing to do was to claim the 2 thrones that had been captured more than a year ago, but of which the power had been left dormant. It was time to awake this power and bind it to Lord Kall. Skaljv, as the Prophetess of her God was the only one with the power to do so (apart from Lord Kall himself). So she was appointed for the task, which was made much easier thanks to her ability to fly : even though the thrones were quite far from the frontline, she could fly through the empire to accomplish her duty without delay.

The Throne of Bureaucracy held a peculiar power. With it, Lord Kall and the people of Helheim got the insight of a better overall organization. Every province started to have a much better administration and improved law enforcement procedures. As a result, tax collectors got slightly better results and faith became more stable. Indeed, the cult to Lord Kall benefited too from this organization and new traditions started to take roots everywhere he was worshiped. The Throne of Zeal on its part made the blessed troops more motivated in battle : an overall boost in morale made them even more elite than they were.

Then, some other news came from Machaka. The once flourishing kingdom was in complete political disarray. Even though the war against Niefelheim had been quite successful, they had also started a conflict against the spectral legions of Therodos. And from what was heard, it didn’t go well and some major defeats had caused chaos amongst their leaders. And even though their pretender, Zazu the Phoenix was trying to put things together, it was rather clear that they were doomed (i.e. player gave up and went AI). Given this change of leadership, Helheim did not feel bound to its Non Agression Pact with them anymore. So, they decided to secure the Eastern border with Machaka in the same way as they did with Xibalba, but with a much larger involvement given 4 provinces were to be taken at once.

These attacks against Machaka were all successful. And it was also full of interesting lessons as every place was taken in a different way. Was it a lone Vanjarl powered with magical items, or a Dis with Valkyries, or a force of Mounted Hirdmen, or a few Jotun wolves sent to prove their battle worthiness. The most interesting fight occurred when 15 Valkyries unexpectedly met 60 spectral warriors from Therodos. Indeed, after defeating the main forces of Machaka they were trying to make a deeper push … which collided with Helheim’s forces. The battle was another proof of the power of Valkyries as the enemy force was almost wiped out for the cost of only 3 valkyries.

And while these battles took place, some other important political events occured. Indeed, on the western marches of the kingdom, where formerly ruled Xibalba, a conflict had started between Marverni and Ur. Helheim had built good relationships with Marverni through several trade agreements. Also, Ur’s provinces on the nothern border of Helheim were almost defenceless while Helheim had the means for a quick invasion, in the same way as they just invaded Machaka. And not only these were defenceless, but there were a lot of them. Huge territories with many riches that looked like easy targets … so, an agreement was made with Marverni to help them in their war. But Lord Kall had signed that Non Agression Pact with Ur and, given Nemok of Ur had been faithful to it all along, he intended to respect it. So Helheim formaly broke the pact in mid-spring with the agreed 3 month delay (which would lead then to mid-summer).

However, by early summer Marverni suffered a significant defeat against Ur, which made Lord Kall wonder if he had made the right choice. Anyway, Helheim had not declared war on them, just broke the NAP, so there was still time to assess the situation. Furthermore Ur sent a messager begging Lord Kall to change his mind … and he answered Nemok the simple truth : yes we will take time to assess the situation, but our pact is over from now on.

Meanwhile Agartha was moving exactly as planned, and so by mid-summer, they were just 1 step to counter-attack the fortress of Mountains of Evernight, which gave finally a good reason not to attack Ur and take the time necessary to know what to do with that situation and Marverni.

Given everything had went according to the predictions, the Earthquake team was regrouping in Mountains of Evernight and would be ready on time. The last items were forged, the last units recruited … In this mid-summer of the 3rd year of the Ascension war, everything was ready.

The plan was to regroup as many forces as possible in the fortress so that when the ennemy would attack he’d have to spend at least two months to breach the fortress. This way the attack could be split in 2 phases, the first month sending the Earthquake commando team to weaken them, and the second month sending everything at hand, including the newly recruited Jotun wolves which started to be quite a number. Everything was ready indeed, it was time prepare and welcome the upcoming battle …
